Derrick Velasquez

Derrick Velasquez (b. 1982, CA, United States) is an artist and curator based in Denver, Colorado. He holds a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Art History from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MFA from The Ohio State University. Velasquez’s sculptural and installation work explores light, colour, and structure, placing perceptual experience in dialogue with architecture and design.

 

His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum, Herron School of Art and Design, The Frame Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, Drexel University, Center for Visual Art (Denver), VAC University of Colorado, and the New Mexico Museum of Art (FOCA Biennial), and has appeared in art fairs including Art Toronto, Expo Chicago, and Plural Montréal.

 

Velasquez’s work is held in public and private collections such as Temple University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Miami University. He has received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant (2017), MacDowell Colony Fellowship (2019), Mass MoCA Assets for Artists Residency (2018–2019), Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum Artist Fellowship (2015), and the Colorado Creative Industries Career Advancement Award (2015). He is cofounder of Friend of a Friend Gallery, a curatorial project in Denver.

Il est titulaire d’un BFA en arts plastiques et d’un BA en histoire de l’art de l’Université de Californie à Santa Barbara, ainsi que d’un MFA de l’Ohio State University. Son travail place la sculpture et l’installation en dialogue avec l’architecture et le design, explorant la perception de la lumière, de la couleur et de la structure dans l’espace.

 

Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans des institutions telles que le Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, le Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, le Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum, le Herron School of Art and Design, The Frame Gallery à Carnegie Mellon, Drexel University, le Center for Visual Art (Denver), VAC University of Colorado, et le New Mexico Museum of Art (FOCA Biennial).
